Bhagavad Gita Chapter V: Yoga of Renunciation of Action
The Bhagavad Gita ‘Song of the Lord’ is a conversation between Lord Krsna and the warrior prince Arjuna on the battlefield of the Kurukshetra. It provides a practical philosophy which expounds the technique for an active and peaceful life. Above all, it ushers one towards the goal of spiritual Enlightenment.
The chapter traces the three stages of the spiritual path leading to Self-realisation. From a spiritual initiate, yogi developing into an ascetic, sannyasi and culminating in an Enlightened soul, jnani. Krsna elaborates the distinct ways in which the three types of individuals relate to action.
Having practised the yajnas sacrifices prescribed in the preceding chapter and gained wisdom, a seeker enters the state of renunciation. The chapter elucidates this stage of development preliminary to meditation and Self-realisation.
